Cortez George-West writes in her book, Stories: Then & Now, pg 83 "Newsy Bits about Neighbors & Friends in the Valley": Alvin and Bessie Dorrough - especially in the music field. Alvin coached Ada Mae McLaughlin, Marie Standifer, Lena, and me in quartet singing. Bessie played the piano.

He Was Past President Of The Harahan Rotary Club, A Member Of Vfw Post 3798, A Grand Knight Of St. Bernard Council 4744 And Was Awarded Knight Of The Year In Alabama. He Was A Parishioner Of St. Patrick's Catholic Church And Was A Captain In The Army During The Vietnam War. Survivors Include His Wife, Freddie Sertell Ruddy; Three Sons, Joseph A., Frederick A. And William M. Ruddy Jr.; A Sister, Mary R. Dierkson Of Trumbull, Conn.; And A Brother, James A. Ruddy Of Westlake Village, Calif. A Mass Will Be Said Saturday At 11 A.M. At St. Patrick's Catholic Church, 724 Camp St. Visitation Will Be Friday From 6 To 9 P.M. And Saturday From 9 To 10:30 A.M. At Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home. YESTER, MARION FREDERICK, SR., age 91, passed away on Sunday, November 8, 2009 in Birmingham, Alabama. Mr. Yester was born on August 24, 1918 in Birmingham, Alabama to Margaret and Lawrence Yester. He attended St. Paul's Elementary and High School. He served his country during WWII in the U.S. Navy. Marion married Dorothy Louise Franklin on January 16, 1954. He owned Yester Ceramic Lab for 50 years. He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Dot; his sons, Marion Yester, Jr. (Sandy), Matt Yester (Donna) and Jack Yester; his daughters, Mary Margaret Barksdale (Bill), Cathy Lindberg (Jon), Marie Eidson (John Gaines) and Jennifer Peace (Scott); his sister, Bernadine Seay; 15 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. The family would also like to thank the nurses and staff of St. Martin's in the Pines and Alacare Hospice for the care they showed to Mr. Yester and the family. The wake will be on Tuesday from 5:00 - 7:00 PM at St. Francis Xavier Church with a prayer service to follow. The funeral mass will be at 10:00 AM on Wednesday at St. Francis Xavier Church. Graveside services will follow at Elmwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the St. Francis Xavier School Endowment, 2 Xavier Circle, Birmingham, AL 35213.
